ABSTRACT:

Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives. Technology has not only changed our way of living; in fact, it has influenced different aspects of life and redefined culture. Advancement in technology has transformed communication and developed human interactions through the wide use of cell phones, social media platforms, e-mails and other messaging apps. The technological innovation continues to accelerate, brings both the opportunities and challenges. Technology has touched almost all the generations and influenced every field. No doubt advancement in technology offers countless benefits but it is essential to consider its impact on society. The objective of this paper is to explore the impact of modern technology on society and education, highlighting both the benefits and drawbacks. We examine the effects of modern technology on communication, productivity and the environment, as well as its potential to exacerbate social isolation, cyberbullying and job displacement.

KEYWORDS: Modern technology, Productivity, Human interaction, Society.

INTRODUCTION:

It is well known that, digital technologies have reached about 60% of the world’s population. Now a days people rely more on technology than ever before. Social media, online gaming and online service have changed the way of people interaction. There is a rapid declination in the use of traditional ways of communication that enhances togetherness. Carter (2005), in his study examine that modern technology has revolutionized communication and human interaction. Anyone with internet connection can easily access a wide knowledge. This has led to vast changes in research and keeps us update with current affairs. The older generation did not have such facilities. The development in technology has expanded educational opportunities through E-learning platforms. A few decades ago, people had to wait for days or even months to get a message but now a days it hardly takes few seconds to send a message by using cell phones, is a gift of technology. Thus, we can say that, technology has tremendous impact on the way we live, work and interact with one another. From smart phones and social media to artificial intelligence (AI) and the INTERNET of Things (IOT), the technology has transformed every aspect of our lives.

However modern technology has made our life easier in several aspects, it is essential to consider both the positive and negative consequences of this trend. There was no dependency on internet in past, so the people relied on newspaper or television to gain their knowledge. In the past, individuals engaged in various indoor and outdoor activities that kept them physically and mentally fit. However, the rise of increasing dependency on technology has led to greater lethargy. No doubt technology benefits modern people in almost every aspect of their lives, however, there is a price to pay.

Impact of Modern Technology on Communication:

In today’s digital age about more than half of world’s population is using online platforms. We use internet to shop, start business, create friendship, education and even to pass the time. Guzman and Lewis (2020), examine in their work that AI chatbots, dating apps and virtual reality has replaced reality. We are getting closer to a world in which social interaction will mostly take place online. Modern technology has made easier to connect with people from all over the world. Use of internet has a positive impact on human communication. By using internet and social media platforms we are more linked than before. Virtual connections, barrier free interactions, online meetings, E-learning, online shopping and online dating apps have made life easier. However, technology has made easier to connect with people from all over the world within few seconds, it also has negative impact on our social lives. We are witness of rapid decline of decreased human contact, rise of cyberbullying and online harassment. Because of social media platforms, people are communicating with one other instead of personal meetings and spending time together. One can communicate with friends and relatives by phones or texting message rather than having physical interaction. Narcy et.al (2019), proposed in their work that people are increasingly communicating with each other through computers and smartphones rather than in-person. They claimed that there are additional opportunities behind computer and smart phones. The technology is destroying the quality of human interactions while it has allowed us to maintain long-distance friendships and relations that were previously unthinkable. Studies suggest that over- reliance on digital communication can lead to feelings of isolation, depression and loneliness.

Impact of Modern Technology on Education and Jobs:

Modern technology has revolutionized world of school. In present education system we cannot ignore the role of technology. Modern technology has made simpler to acquire knowledge for students as well as instructors. Brill et.al (2007), in their work explained that, the role of technology in classroom is absolutely unavoidable now a days. Use of visual images and projectors aids in learning is a great use of technology. Also, digital technology has increased more apps that help students to grow and learn. Moreover, now a days the online courses and online degrees are becoming popular. M. Arvindhan, (2019) in his study has explained, the modern technology has a significant role in education system. He claimed that technology has made teaching and learning easier and also proposed to develop an educational system that has more technical capacity in the future. Beringer (2009) and Bounds (2010) and other researchers in their work explained the importance of face-to-face interaction for kids’ education and discussed significance of role of, using a pen rather than a keyboard in promoting children’s mental health development and enhancing their thinking ability. Coleman (2012), in his study found that over use of technology in teens can lead to serious development problems.

The advancement in technology predicts to influence jobs over next few years positively. Modern technology streamlined, simplify and increase the safety of many professions which reduce the necessity of human Labour. AI powered tools, automation have streamlined process and boost efficiency and productivity. The advancement in technology like automation and AI powered technologies has increased the concerns about job loss. Brynjolfsson and Mc Afe’s (2023), claims in their study that rapid technological advancement has been eliminating jobs more quickly than it is creating them. No doubt innovative technologies have the power to raise economic by generating new jobs, but they can result in joblessness.

Life was Better, before the Digital age:

Life was better in 90s because less technology had evolved. In past there was simplicity in daily activities. People relied on in- person interaction and face-to-face communication, there was a genuine emotional connection before smart phones and 24/7 connectivity. In past neighbor would regularly get together in common areas to interact with each other, which promote a feeling of support and belongingness. Subramanian (2018), explained in his research that older generations come around to the concept of using technology during pandemic. Although modern technology has greatly improved our quality of life and provided us with all conveniences to live peacefully, but it has actually made our lives more stressful. Spending excessive time on social media apps leads to stress, anxiety and difficulty in focusing. Also comparing oneself to other’s online profile can low self-esteem. Sharing personal information on social media can pose to harassment, which may cause psychological harm and depression. Nica (2018), studied that over use of cell phones or social media cause a release of dopamine, a chemical associated with pleasure. It is the same chemical that gives people a high after drinking or smoking. As a result, access use of phones and social media apps is highly addictive and contribute to a stressful life. Tanisha and Zaker (2024) in their study claimed that development in technology has disrupted the world. They described that how the advancement in technology has made individual lazy and life more stressful. Thus, the study proposed that the quality of life was more satisfying, simpler and stress-free, when technology played a less dominant role.

CONCLUSION:

Advancement in technologies is increasing inequality and endangering privacy. Government, corporations and individual all have to make a decision on how to use and control new technologies. Modern technology is a double-edge sword, offering numerous benefits while also posing significant challenges. However, millions of people worldwide adopted the technology and utilizing its services effectively, but it has increased the difficult of daily existence. It is expected that people will use productive applications to do more tasks in less time, which put them under pressure to work faster and more productively. As a result, people experience more stress. Use of technology is causing us to spread ourselves and is gradually destroying the social interaction. Long time continuous usage of smart phone and other electronic gadgets may cause mental and physical health risks. Social media platforms and usage of online apps have increased the risk of online abuse, harassment and cyberbullying. Advancement in technology led to the inventions of industries which emits harmful gases into the atmosphere, that causes air pollution and global warming. Also, E-waste, energy consumptions and resource depletion associated with the production and disposal of digital devices has hazardous impact on our environment. In the world of modern technology everyone is busy with their phones or other digital devices; this is how technology has negatively affected the modern world. Thus, the study conclude that the life was better in past, when technology played a less role in day-to-day activities. Life was simpler, relations were genuine and there was less stress.
